William H. Bill Thompson, 74, of Marshalltown, died Sunday, June 21, 2009, at Grandview Heights while in the care of his loving family and Iowa River Hospice. Funeral services will be at 10:00 a.m. Wednesday, June 24, 2009, at Mitchell Family Funeral Home. Burial will be in Rose Hill Memorial Gardens. The Mitchell Family Funeral Home has been caring for Bill and his family. Ph 641-844-1234. William Herman Thompson was born on February 18, 1935, in Marshalltown. He graduated from Lamoille High School. Bill enlisted in the Iowa Army National Guard and served from 1956-1960. He was then in the Army Reserves from 1960-1964. On July 5, 1958, Bill married Sandra Huffaker in Marshalltown. The couple lived in Marshalltown their entire married lives and raised four children: Linda, Robert, Karen, and Marilyn. Bill worked at Dunns Phillips 66, Superior 400, Meads Dairy, Cornbelt Sales as a mechanic, and at Arnold Motor Supply. He was a member of the Legion of Guardsman, EE Weatherly Post #1 and was Past Commander and Vice Commander. He enjoyed working on cars, doing handyman work, and spending time with his family. He absolutely loved playing cards- poker, pepper, 500, pinochle, scat, rook, and cribbage. Bill will be lovingly remembered by his wife, Sandra, of Marshalltown; his children, Linda(Jim) Norem of Randall, Rob (April) Thompson of Watertown, WI, Karen Bassett of Gladbrook, and Marilyn(Ward) Ingham of Gladbrook; his grandchildren, Tarra(Austin) Carlson, Jaimee Norem, Brittany Thompson, Emily Thompson, Charissa Bassett, Bud(Jeanne) Bassett, Hannah Bassett, Jessica Ingham, Jillisa Ingham, Steve Ingham, and Tyler Ingham; his great-grandchildren, Ryan Koester, Owen Koester, and Jasmine Bassett; his brother, Howard(Daisy) Thompson of Marshalltown, his sister, Joan Maytag, of Marshalltown; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins. In death, he has rejoined his parents, his twin brother, Robert Harold Thompson, his son-in-law, Lee Bassett, and his sister, Ellen Diller.
