Billy Degner

Billy Ray Degner, 81, of rural Green Mountain, Iowa, passed away in the care of Iowa River Hospice on January 19th, 2016. Memorial services will be held on Saturday, January 23rd, 2016, at 3:30 pm, at the Mitchell Family Funeral Home. Visitation will be held an hour prior. Mitchell Family Funeral Home is caring for Billy and his family. Billy Degner was born to Walter and Bertha (Nelson) Degner, at the family farm on September 15th, 1934. He was raised and educated in the area, graduating from the Dysart community school district in 1951. On December 19th, 1953, Billy and Helen Sophia Hach were united in marriage at the Green Mountain Congregational Church. Together, the family made their home in rural Green Mountain. Billy was still an active farmer and was a dedicated soil conservationist. He loved fishing, boating, working on the landscaping in the yard and wandering through Theisens. He was a charter member of the Green Mountain Lions club, the Iowa Valley Insurance Board, and a member of the Soil and Water Conservation Board. Left to cherish his memory is his wife; Helen Degner, children; JoAnn (Alan) Kouba, Janet (Walter) Canavese, Tom (Cindy) Degner, grandchildren; Emily (Daniel) Sheetz, Leah (Tim) Nissly, Erin (Adam) Williams, Wesley (Katie) Kouba, Sarah Canavese, Eric Canavese, Dustin Degner, Jessica (Troy) Airey, Kelly (Matt) Grossman, Jamie Degner, 18 great-grandchildren, sister; Marjorie Foster of Dysart, sister in-law; Nancy Degner of Traer. In death he rejoins his parents; Walter and Bertha Degner, brothers; Hubert, Homer, Gerald and Dean Degner, sister; Carol Degner, grandson; Paul Kouba.
