Bobbie Jay

Bobbie Jay, 81, of Marshalltown, died Wednesday, October 12, 2011, at Grandview Heights Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. Visitation for Bobbie will be held from 5:00 p.m.7:00 p.m., Sunday, October 16, at the Mitchell Family Funeral Home. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m., Monday, October 17, at St. Henry Catholic Church. A private family entombment will take place at Riverside Cemetery. Bobbie was born February 1, 1930, in Clemons, Iowa, the son of Robert and Minnie (Myers) Jay. He was raised and educated in Clemons and graduated from Clemons High School in 1947. During his time in high school Bobbie was active in vocal music, basketball and baseball and also played on the Marshalltown Jr. Legion baseball team in 1946. Following high school graduation he was employed by Fisher Governor. Bobbie served his country as a member of 2nd Infantry Division of the United States Army during the Korean War. After receiving an honorable discharge in 1952, he returned to Marshalltown. Bobbie was united in marriage to Veronica Bulanek at the St. Mary Catholic Church in Marshalltown on June 10, 1953. Following their marriage they made their home in Marshalltown and raised their family. With the exception of his two years served in the military, Bobbie was employed by Fisher Controls for over 39 years in the office division at the time of his retirement in 1986. During his time at Fishers he was active on both the bowling and softball leagues. During his free time Bobbie enjoyed billiards, cheering on the St. Louis Cardinals, and during his younger years hunting squirrels and pheasants. He was also active in his community by serving as a volunteer for over 15 years at the Emergency Food Box, and coaching both boys Little League baseball and girls softball teams. Bobbie was a member of the St. Henry Catholic Church and will be remembered as an easy-going man who spoke few words but led by big examples. Bobbie is survived by his wife Veronica of Marshalltown, his children: Larry Jay of Coralville, Dennis Jay of Marshalltown, Teri (Greg) Wilson of Marshalltown, Barbara Jay of Des Moines, Steven (Erin Toot) Jay of Nevada, Iowa, and Karen Jay of West Des Moines, his grandchildren: Jamie (Stewart) Gardner, Jeff (Maggie) Wilson, Jaleb Jay and Jacoby Jay, his sisters-in-law: JoAnn Jay of Marshalltown, and Shirley Jay of Interlaken, New York, and several nieces and nephews.Bobbie was preceded in death by his parents, his stepmother Una, and his siblings: Bill Jay, Roger Jay, and Lucille Cox.
