Carl Griggs, 64, of Marshalltown, died Tuesday, January 18, at his home while under the care of his loving family and Iowa River Hospice. Funeral services for Carl will be held at 10:30 a.m, Saturday, January 22, at the Mitchell Family Funeral Home. Interment will take place at Riverside Cemetery in Marshalltown. Visitation for Carl will be held from 5:00 p.m 7:00 p.m., Friday, January 21, at the Mitchell Family Funeral Home where his family will be present to greet friends. Carls family asks all friends and family to dress casually. Memorial contributions may be directed in Carls name to his family. Carl was born January 22, 1946, in Marshalltown, Iowa the son of Maurice and Clarice (Ingledue) Griggs. Their family lived in Melbourne for a short time before moving to Marshalltown where he was raised and educated in the Marshalltown School system. Following high school, Carl served his country as a member of the United States Army. He actively served his country during the Vietnam War serving two tours of duty. Following his honorable discharge from the United States Army, Carl returned home to Marshalltown. On September 28, 1968, Carl was united in marriage to Joan Mahoney. To this union four children were born: Brian, Kevin, Curt and Amber. During the time his family lived in Albion he was employed at the elevator and was also the Mayor of Albion for six years. Carl also worked as a foreman in Gibson City, Illinois for a short time before his family returned to Marshalltown. Carl was a driver for Ruan Transportation for over 15 years and had driven over three million miles. He had also driven for McGregors and VanWyck and had been employed with the Central Iowa Machine Shop, Don Anderson Heating & Cooling and Krantmans Inc. Carl enjoyed cars and loved to work on and restore street rods. During his younger years Carl also enjoyed stock car racing. He also especially enjoyed playing the slot machines at the casino. Carl is survived by his wife Joan Griggs, of Marshalltown, his children: Brian Griggs of Marshalltown, Kevin (Diane) Griggs of Marshalltown, Curt (Amber) Griggs of Marshalltown,, Amber (Rik) Relph of Garwin, his grandchildren: Kayle, Bryton, Kira, Ashley, Brandon, Lexi, Skyler and Emily, his three brothers: Bill (Esther) Griggs of Clinton, Bob (Nancy) Griggs of Illinois, Laverne (Erlayne) Griggs of Marshalltown, his mother-in-law Vera Mahoney of Marshalltown and several nieces and nephews. Carl was preceded in death by his parents.
