Carl Victor Halsted, 88, of Marshalltown, died October 2nd, 2008, at his home while under the care of his loving family and Iowa River Hospice. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, October 6th, 2008, at the Mitchell Family Funeral Home. Burial will be in the Riverside Cemetery. The Mitchell Family Funeral Home is caring for Carl and his family. Ph 641-844-1234. Carl was born on November 2, 1919, in Buchanan County, Iowa, the son of Everett and Christina (Nelson) Halsted. Educated in Marshall County schools, he was a graduate of Marshalltown High School Class of 1938. Carl served in the US Navy during World War II. He displayed with pride the flag from his ship USNS Denebola. He was a member of the American Legion, State Center Post. He married Betty Marie Peterson in 1947 and had two children, Ron (LaVerne) Halsted of Grand Prairie, TX, and Victoria (Roger) Hutton of St. Charles, IA. On September 23, 1978, Carl married Gail Nolta in Marshalltown. The couple had two children, Elenora Ele Halsted of Lincoln, NE, and Max Halsted of Marshalltown. Carl farmed north of Marshalltown, where he was well known for his ability to repair everything. If it was made out of steel, he could build it. He operated a custom hay baling business with Gail and worked with the New Idea company engineers with baler prototypes. His weather forecasts were usually more accurate than the experts. He enjoyed horses, making wine, and telling jokes and stories. Carl was a member of the Central Christian Church, charter member of the Iowa Cattlemens Association, Farm Bureau, and former member of the Pork Producers. Surviving Carl are his wife, Gail, and four children, five grandchildren, sister Dorothy (Charles) Petefish of Osage, IA, plus numerous extended family members. In death, he is reunited with his parents, his brothers Harold (Fern) Halsted, and Don Halsted, and his sister Florence (Vernon) Elsberry.
