Carl E. Smith, 89, of the Iowa Veterans Home, formerly of Stratford and Webster City, died peacefully, Monday morning, June 10, 2013, at the Mary Greeley Medical Center in Ames, Iowa. Following cremation, a private family memorial service will be held at a later date. Born Carl Edward Smith on February 9, 1924, in Davis County, Iowa, he was the son of Roscoe and Rachel (Tadlock) Smith. He graduated in 1942, and soon enlisted to serve his country honorably in WWII. He was stationed in the United States Navy as a radioman until receiving his honorable discharge at the Norfolk Naval Base.Mr. Smith was employed for nearly 30 years in Webster City at Frigidaire as a superintendent. He retired in 1988. Carl was a former member of the American Legion, Elks Lodge, Moose Lodge and the Acacia Masonic Lodge A.F. & A.M. Carl was known for his love of the outdoors and his large gardens.Left to cherish his memory are his children: Dennis Smith of Las Vegas, Nevada, Sherre Fisher of Van Meter, Iowa, Cynthia (Tom) Pekarek of Steamboat Rock, Iowa, and Carla (Jeff) Murra of Des Moines, as well as 8 grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren and his siblings-Forest Smith in Florida, Juanita Rose of Ottumwa, Iowa, Josephine Page of Tucson, AZ and many nieces, nephews, his IVH family and friends.In death, Carl rejoined his parents, a brother in infancy, and sisters Edna, Hazel, Freda and Eva.
