Carmen Kunkel, of Marshalltown passed away with her children by her side on Thursday, August 27, 2015 at Story County Medical Center in Nevada, Iowa. Funeral Services will be held at 10:00 a.m., Friday, September 4 at St. Henrys Catholic Church with Father Don Czapla and Father Tom Braak officiating. Burial will be at Rose Hill Memorial Gardens. Immediately following the service friends are invited for a time of fellowship and refreshments at St. Henrys fellowship hall with burial to follow. Friends may call from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. Thursday, September 3 with a rosary to follow at Mitchell Family Funeral Home. To offer condolences, please visit www.mitchellfh.com. The Mitchell Family Funeral Home is caring for Carmen and her family. Daughter of Edward & Hazel Herzog, she was born August 22, 1925, in Melbourne. She graduated in 1943 from Van Cleve High School. On August 1, 1948 she married her high school sweetheart Edwin Kunkel at Immaculate Conception Church in Haverhill. In 1956 they built the brick house where she had resided for the last 59 years. Carmen loved to cook and worked in the kitchen at the St. Henrys grade school. Besides the students, she cooked lunch for her children, grandchildren and many nieces and nephews from 1956 until 1997. Carmen was a member of St. Henrys Parish, the Knights of Columbus as well as served as youth director for the Catholic Order of Forresters for a number of years. Carmen was also a member of St. Henrys CCW, St. Cecilias Study Club and served on a committee as a patient advocate for the Iowa Veterans Home. She enjoyed fishing, camping, bowling, watching the St. Louis Cardinals, cooking, ceramics/crafting, traveling and playing cards. Carmen took great pride in the acreage where she lived with her flowers, garden and yard. She also enjoyed the time spent with her family, grandchildren, great grandchildren and friends. On August 22, her immediate family were present to celebrate her 90th birthday. It was a day filled with love and joy. Left to cherish her memory are her 3 children: Dennis Kunkel and wife Nancy of Kailua, Hawaii, Debbie Wegman and fiance Jerry Jones of Marshalltown, and Sherry Storjohann and her husband Jeff of Carroll; 2 grandchildren: Lori Morey and her husband Jason of Ankeny and Becky Wegman and her fianc Nick Blomgren of Colorado Springs, Colorado; 3 great-grandchildren: Ian, Ellie and Josie Morey; sister-in-laws: Rosella Hartwig and her husband Bob, Esther Nusbaum and her husband Jim and Marilyn Spafford and her husband Al, all of Marshalltown and sister-in-law Mary Kunkel of Davenport. She is preceded in death by her husband Ed, her parents Edward and Hazel Herzog, brother Ray Herzog and sister-in-law Dee Herzog, her father-in-law John Kunkel and mother-in-law Bertha Kunkel, brother-in-laws: Bill Kunkel, Urban Kunkel, Cyril Kunkel and Elmer Kunkel and sister-in-laws: Colleen Kunkel and Delores Kunkel.
