Carol G. Squiers, 90, of Marshalltown, died Monday, February 13, 2012, at the Southridge Nursing and Rehabilitation Center while under the care of Iowa River Hospice. Funeral services for Carol will be held Friday, February 17, at 11:00 a.m., at the First Presbyterian Church in Marshalltown. Burial will take place at the Haven Cemetery near Tama, Iowa. Visitation for Carol will be held from 5:00 p.m. 7:00 p.m., Thursday, February 16, at the Mitchell Family Funeral Home. Memorial contributions may be directed in her name to the Toledo EMS. (Stone) Squiers was born on May 16, 1921, on the Stone family farm south of Haven, Iowa. She was the third of four daughters born to Frank Thomas and Florence (Rector) Stone. Carol attended the one-room school at Haven through 8th grade and graduated from Brooklyn high school in 1938. She taught school at Haven for one year before entering nursing school at Evangelical Deaconess Hospital (now MMSC) in Marshalltown. While in nursing school, Carol became engaged to Frank Squiers and moved to Seattle while he was stationed in Vancouver during WWII. They were married December 31, 1945 in Marshalltown.During their marriage, Carol worked at the Story City, Webster City, Ames and Marshalltown hospitals; and she was one of the first RNs to train for and work in the first ICU at MMSC. Carol played a role in establishing the Toledo ambulance service. She also taught senior nursing students for a couple of years.Carol had a green thumb with all kinds of flowers and especially roses. She enjoyed all types of handwork and was a talented and creative quilter. She was a member of the 1st Presbyterian Church, the Iowa Quilters Guild, and the Des Moines Area Quilters Guild. Carol is survived by her son Larry (Karen), Marshalltown; daughter Lorell, Des Moines; grandsons Logan (Alyssa), Corpus Christi, Texas, and Grant, Milwaukee, Wisconsin, sister Faye Gallagher, Brooklyn, Iowa, and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband Frank; son Gary and sisters Ada Squiers and Helen Beadle.Carols family would like to thank the staff members of both Iowa River Hospice and Southridge Nursing and Rehabilitation Center for their care and compassion for Carol.
