Carolyn Kay Vavra of Laurel, Iowa passed away on Friday, August 28, 2026

Born on December 24, 1944 to Edward L. and Blanche West Matya.

Growing up in the country with her brother Edward E. Matya (wife Barbara) and sister Roberta Rose (niece Amanda and nephew Christopher) Carolyn met the love her life Doug Vavra and they were married May 9th of 1964 Together they built a beautiful life starting in Marshalltown and ending up in Laurel. They had 3 daughters, Carrie (Steve), Dami (Darren) and (Angie Lynn deceased at birth), son in law Scott Simatovich (Kelly). Then their family grew with grandchildren Samie (Logan), Sadie (Riley), Hawken and Adisyn. And now Great Grandchildren Oaklyn, Everly and Cayden.

Over the years Doug and Carolyn set the bar for being daredevils, led foot racing cars, riding motorcycles, and Jumping out of planes at 80 years old. She cherished her time with her family and friends. She enjoyed crafting, crocheting, and being a part of the red hat and silver fox clubs. Carolyn made everyone else a priority , lending an ear and a helping hand no matter what was going on in her own life

She is a beautiful woman with a matching heart. Her laugh and her quick whited and unexpected responses will be missed. I truly believe if more people were like her the world would be a better place. If you are fortunate to find a love like her and Doug you are truly blessed , actually their entire life Is something to be jealous of.
