Carroll Smith, 88, of Marshalltown, died Friday, January 16, 2009, at the Grandview Heights in Marshalltown.Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, January 20th, 2009, at First United Church of Christ in Marshalltown with Pastor Kim Wilson officiating. He will be laid to rest in Rose Hill Memorial Gardens. Visitation will be Monday from 5:00-7:00 p.m. at the Mitchell Family Funeral Home. The Mitchell Family Funeral Home is caring for Carroll and his family. 641-844-1234.Born on August 20, 1920, at home in Ferguson, Iowa, he was the son of Lyman William and Ruth Agnes (Finders) Smith. He graduated from the Ferguson School in 1937. For a short time after graduation, he worked at a poultry plant in Oelwein, Iowa. He married Lois Mace of Haverhill on August 20, 1941, at St Johns Evangelical Church at Haverhill, Iowa. After they were married, Carroll worked at the Swift Plant in Marshalltown for 1 year and then farmed the family farm from 1941 to 1983 until retiring to Marshalltown. Carroll was a Marshall County Assessor for over 30 years. He was very active in his community being on the Church board, belonging to the Farm Bureau, Marshall Mutual Insurance board. Carroll and Lois were foreign student hosts and also members of the First United Church of Christ in Marshalltown. Carroll loved to travel and got to spend winters in Arizona. He cherished his family and was blessed with many babies in his life- he truly loved them all. Left to cherish his memory are his wife of 67 years, Lois, his children, Marjorie (Bob) Grimes of Marshalltown and Stanley (Barbara) Smith of Warland Wyoming, 8 grandchildren and 17 great grandchildren and a sister Darlene Kupka of Ferguson. He was preceded in death by his son, Lynn Smith, grandson Mark Smith, and brother Marvin Smith.
