Charlene Gibbs, 73, of Conrad, died Saturday, March 7, 2009, at MMSC while in the care of her loving family and Iowa River Hospice. Funeral services will be at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, March 11, 2009, at Whitten Community Church. Burial will be at a future date. Visitation will be on Tuesday evening from 5:00-7:00 p.m. at Mitchell Family Funeral Home. Memorials may be directed to the family. For condolences, please visit www.mitchellfh.com. The Mitchell Family Funeral Home has been caring for Charlene and her family. Ph 641-844-1234. Charlene Faye Mitchell was born on July 19, 1935, at home in rural Grundy County. She was the daughter of Virgil and Ruby (Mikkelson) Mitchell. She graduated from Whitten High School in 1952. On July 3, 1955, Charlene married Dale Gibbs at the Whitten Community Church. To this union, three children were born- Greg, Connie, and Janiece. The couple lived their entire married lives together in Conrad. Charlene worked at Kresges, JC Penneys, Marshalltown Instruments for 19 years, and then Country Inn Restaurant until her retirement in 1997. She was a member of the Whitten Community Church and the Legion Auxiliary. She was a strong supporter of community events and the Fire Department. She enjoyed cooking, gardening, camping, playing the organ, and treasured her family. Charlene loved watching basketball, either high school or college, and was an avid Hawkeye fan. She had a niece who played basketball for Iowa State, and Charlene was able to see her play at Hilton Coliseum. When the Hawkeyes played the Cyclones, Charlene cheered for whoever had the ball! Charlene is survived by her husband, Dale, of the Iowa Veterans Home; her 3 children, Greg Gibbs of Conrad, Connie(Mike) Woosley of Conrad, and Janiece Jan (Doug) Doe of Melbourne; her 11 grandchildren, Christopher Gibbs, Jeff Gibbs, Amanda Gibbs, Chad Gibbs, Heather Gibbs, Toni Gibbs, Scott Woosley, Casey Woosley, Joseph Woosley, Nathan Doe, and Ryan Doe; her 5 great-grandchildren, Jade, Keaton, Logan, Garrett, and Holden; her brothers, Arlyn Mitchell of Marshalltown, and Larry Mitchell of Beaman; her brother-in-law, Don Gibbs of New Providence; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins. In death, she has rejoined her parents and her 2 nieces, Danita Mitchell and Rhonda Kunc.
