Charles Albert Atcher, 82, of Laurel, passed away on Tuesday, April 10, 2018 at his home and under the care of the Iowa River Hospice Home. Memorial visitation for Charles will be held on Sunday, April 15, 2018 from 4:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. at the Mitchell Family Funeral Home in Marshalltown. Burial will be held at a later date at Rock Creek Cemetery in rural Garwin. Memorials may be directed to the family for designation at a later time. Atcher was born on November 16, 1935 at home in rural Garwin to Waldo and Dorothy Mae Ridout Atcher. He graduated from Montour High School in 1954. Charles started working for Winters/Borden’s Dairy in Marshalltown one week before school got out. On December 31, 1959, Charles was united in marriage to Judith Elaine Good at the Methodist Church in Marshalltown. In 1961, Charles started working 2 jobs; along with working at the dairy, he also began farming. In 1966, he quit Winters and started working nights at Fisher Controls, where he retired from in 1994, after 28 ½ years. After the farm was sold in 1971, Charles and Judith moved to Laurel. Charles enjoyed watching football, wrestling with the children, trapping muskrats, camping, fishing, coon hunting, mushroom hunting and restoring old cars. He also enjoyed yard work. His daughter had got him some daylilies and he was instantly hooked. Charles started planting hostas in the shaded areas of the yard and had large beds of irises and Asiatic and oriental lilies. Charles also raised boston terriers and shih tzus and will be missed by his beloved dogs, Bridgette, Sweet Pea, Maggie, Sally and Waldo. Charles is survived by his children: Charles “Jim” Atcher, William “Bill” (Teresa) Atcher, Larry (Lynda) Atcher, Sherri (Scott) Tow and Thomas “Tom” Atcher. Grandchildren: Trisha (Josh Bly), Brittany, Andy, Lisa, Alex (Michelle), Amy, Abby, Austin (Tiffany), Ashley and Autumn. Great grandchildren: Jordan, Jayden, Jaxson, Miles, Oliver, Brayden, Tucker, Wayde, Dawson, Tyler and a first great granddaughter on the way, due in June. He is also survived by his siblings, Loretta Werner and Helen (Larry) Fenton, as well as brothers-in-law, Wendell Powers, Dan (Sandy) Good and Stan (Diana) Good, as well as numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and other family members. Charles is preceded in death by his wife, Judith; parents, Waldo and Dorothy; sisters, Edna Mae Atcher and Frances Powers; mother and father-in-law, Ron and Gerry Good and brothers-in-law, Dave Short and Henry “Hank” Werner.
