He continued working for Concrete Materials after the war and for the Marshalltown City Street Department as Head Mechanic until his retirement in 1986 after 29 years. He enjoyed fishing and loved camping at Holiday Lake with his wife, children and grandchildren. He was a great fan of the Atlanta Braves and the Chicago Cubs, who he finally was able to see win the World Series. He would often be watching more than one game at a time. He enjoyed playing the harmonica with his daughter Charlene. He taught himself how to play the harmonica and guitar. He was a good singer and often sang "You Picked a Fine Time to Leave Me Lucille” and "El Paso." He loved to watch westerns and was never without his snap shirts and Skoal Wintergreen Long Cut. He was a man with a great sense of humor and a kind heart. Many neighbors and friends referred to him as quite the character. At the age of 94 he was still mowing his own lawn and still loved to bake cakes, key lime pies and especially brownies. He lived and loved with all his heart and we are so blessed to have had him for 94 years. “ See you in the Morning, first thing”
