Charles "Harry" Callaway

Charles “Harry” Callaway, of Grundy Center, Iowa, passed away Friday, December 20, 2019 at the Iowa River Hospice Home in Marshalltown, Iowa. A visitation for family and friends will be held on Friday, December 27, 2019 from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. with masonic services beginning at 7:00 p.m. Funeral services for Harry will be held on Saturday, December 28, 2019 at 10:30 a.m. at the Whitten Community Church with Pastor Jim Hartman officiating. Interment will take place immediately following the service in the Melrose Cemetery with military honors. For additional information please visit www.mitchellfh.com . Mitchell Family Funeral Home is caring for Harry and his family. Harry was born June 12, 1939 to Carl J. and Margaret (Eggleston) Callaway at the home of his grandparents in Clemons, Iowa. He grew up in the Whitten area except when his family moved to central Missouri for five years in 1947. Living there was one of his fondest memories. Harry graduated from Union-Whitten High School in 1957. He attended Iowa State College. On June 22, 1962, he was united in marriage to Sandra Schwartz at Saint Paul Lutheran Church in Buckeye, Iowa. Harry served in the U.S. Army for two years. One of those years was in Korea. Harry Worked as an application engineer at Dunham-Bush- MEPCO in Marshalltown for 35 years and as a consultant for MEPCO in Grand Rapids, Michigan for 15 years. He also ran Harry’s Tyre Center in Whitten for 11 years. Harry was a lifelong member of the Whitten Christian/ Whitten Community Church. He served on the committee to merge the Whitten Christian and Whitten Methodist Churches to form the Whitten Community Church. Harry was a member of the Montague #117 Masonic Lodge and Ascension Chapter of Eastern Star in Eldora, Iowa. He was a member of Marshall Lodge #108, St. Aldemar Commandery #30, King Solomon Council #20, and Signet Chapter #38 of Marshalltown. He was a member of Za-Ga-Zig Shrine in Altoona, Iowa. He was a long-time member of the Tin Lizzie Patrol and drove the little blue car in the parades. Harry is survived by his wife of 57 years, Sandra, a daughter Jana (Paul) Bollmeier of Whitten, a son Jason (Rebekah) Callaway of Anamosa, Iowa, a grandson Isaiah Callaway of Ames, granddaughters Nichole, Kyla, and Isabella Callaway of Anamosa, Erin Bollmeier of New Orleans and Audrey (Kevin) Sorlie of Eagan, MN. One brother Larry (Betty) Callaway of Conrad and one sister Garnet “Jeanne” (Chuck) Van Patter of Wilmington, IL. He was preceded in death by his parents and a granddaughter Amanda Callaway. Memorials may be directed to Leukemia and Lymphoma society for fighting blood cancers or the Iowa River Hospice Home. Harry’s obituary was lovingly written by his family.
