Charlotte Schnathorst

Charlotte C. Schnathorst, 95, longtime Laurel resident, died Friday morning, June 21, at the Villa del Sol where she has made her home since December of 2004. Her death came peacefully with family at her side and while in care of Iowa River Hospice and Villa del Sol. Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. Tuesday, June 25th, at the Laurel United Methodist Church with Pastor Marvin Siems officiating. She will be laid to rest in the St. John Cemetery in Jasper County. Visitation will be held from 5-7:00 p.m. on Monday at the Mitchell Family Funeral Home in Marshalltown. Born Charlotte Crain on March 1, 1918, on a farm near Volga, Iowa, she was the fifth of six children born to Delos Jay and Ethel Leo (Smith) Crain. She graduated from the Volga High Schools Class of 1936 and later attended Upper Iowa University in Fayette, Iowa. On September 15th, 1942, she was united in marriage to Frederick Schnathorst in Bethany, Missouri. They made their home at Laurel where two children blessed their lives- Karen and Dale. Charlotte was employed at Fuller Grocery in Laurel and later at Fareway Grocery in Marshalltown for 25 years. Mrs. Schnathorst was a member of the Laurel United Methodist Church, a Gold Star member of the Eastern Star, a 50 year plus member of the Laurel American Legion Auxiliary, the Laurel Ladies Club, the Tuesday Study Club, and the Laurel Senior Citizens and was an avid supporter of the Laurel library. Left to cherish her memory is her son, Dale (Marcella) of LeGrand, two grandchildren- Shelley (Bill) Goecke and Todd (Kara) Schnathorst and great-grandchildren- McKinze and Jake Goecke and Lane and Marissa Schnathorst, sister-in-law Beth Tigges as well as many nieces, nephews, cousins and her family at the Villa del Sol. In death she rejoined her beloved Frederick who died in 1987, her daughter Karen Dee Schnathorst who died in 1953, her parents and siblings Cecil Sherman, Erma Smith, Mildred Midge Jacobson, William Crain and Kathryn Kitty Goeschel.
