Chester Stubbs

Chester (Chet) Stubbs, 93, of Marshalltown, died Friday, April 5th, at the Villa del Sol in Marshalltown. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, April 9th, at Our Savior Lutheran Church with Pastor Mike Herschberger officiating. The Mitchell Family Funeral Home is caring for Chet and his family. Ph. 641-844-1234. Chester Chet Dale Stubbs was born on February 7th, 1920, in rural Green Mountain, Iowa. He was a lifelong resident of Marshall County, having lived on a farm south of Marshalltown most of his life. He served in World War II where he was stationed in Pisa, Italy in the Quartermaster Corps attached to the 5th Army. He was discharged in August of 1946 as a Corporal. He was a member of the American Legion since his honorable discharge. He was the son of Wilfred Raymond and Mildred (Bovee) Stubbs. He received his education in the Ferguson Consolidated Schools. He married Doris Wolken on December 30, 1939, in Lancaster, Missouri. She was well-known as a clerk at Fantles Clothing Store. Chets first employment began with KIOWA Manufacturing. He later worked for Fisher Governor and then Glen L. Martin Aircraft in Bellevue, Nebraska. He began farming in 1947. Alongside his father, they made Stubbs and Son, Realty, a well-respected firm that established his life-long career as a realtor. He retired at age 62 after 31 years of passionate service. Chet was a loyal family man who was a faithful member of Our Savior Lutheran Church. As a child and many years to follow, his family was members of Central Christian Church. Chet had many passions in life, one of them was music. An avid country-western fan, he would entertain few or many with his Martin D-35 Guitar. Known as the Roamin Cowboy, he played on KFJB every Monday night at 8:00 p.m. from 1934 through 1936. Chet and his family enjoyed boating at Clear Lake, Iowa, and he and Doris often used a motor home for trips to Branson, Missouri (and other places in Iowa) to see bluegrass shows. Another passion was flying. He flew 17 different small airplanes (up to 200 hp) with a private license. Surviving are his children: Karen L. Dougherty, Lana (Bill) Wilson and Daniel Stubbs (Shari Upah) all of Marshalltown; seven grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 70 years, Doris, his son-in-law Bill Dougherty, two granddaughters- Kristin and Angie, a great-grandson Michael, his parents and sister, Wilma Stubbs.
