Clair Devick

Clair W. Devick, 91, of Marshalltown, Iowa, passed away on Sunday, October 27, 2013, at the Marshalltown Medical and Surgical Center with his loving family at his side. Funeral services for Clair will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, November 2, 2013, at First Friends Church in Marshalltown. Public visitation will be held from 5:00 p.m. 7:00 p.m. on Friday, November 1, 2013, at Mitchell Family Funeral Home where his family will be present to greet friends. Mitchell Family Funeral Home is caring for Clair and his family. Clair W. Devick, was born on February 5, 1922, in rural Tama County. He was the son of Albert and Sophia (Waldele) Devick. He attended Dunbar Consolidated Schools, graduating in the class of 1939. Clair served his country honorably during WWII as a member of the 739th Engineers Heavy Shop Company. Clair was a Tech Sergeant serving in North Africa, Italy, France and the Philippines. Clair was united in marriage to Iris Ione Tarrence on January 17, 1943, and they were blessed with four children. Ione passed away in 1961. In early 1963, he met Lucille Mae (Sturtz) Rasmussen and they were married on June 15 of that year, blending their two families together as one. Lucille passed away in 2012. Clair was a hardworking man. He worked for Fisher Controls in the Tool Room and KIOWA before establishing Bruin Manufacturing in 1949, with his brother, Dale Devick and George Menne. Before retiring in 1988, he devoted more than 40 years developing and expanding from a small tool shop/aluminum die casting company to the successful precision plastic injection molding company that it is today. Clair was an inventor and an innovator. He was always trying to improve things, it didnt matter what it was, he felt like it needed to be improved. Clair had a passion for his family, taking them on camping trips to see the National Parks out west, and in later years, traveling with his wife to different places such as South Padre Island in Texas and Branson, Missouri. He went to opening day of the Iowa State Fair every year, the Farm Progress Shows in the Midwest when he could, and the Old Threshers Reunion in Mount Pleasant, Iowa, often. Clairs deep faith and trust in God showed through his loving character. He was very active in the First Friends Church in Marshalltown, designing and constructing the stainless steel cross that hangs on the front of the church, so the Light could shine in the darkness. Left to cherish his memory are his children: Dennis (Betty) Devick, of Des Moines; Bruce Devick, of Marshalltown; Diane Devick, of Fairfax, Virginia; Tedd (Marilyn) Devick, of Ames; Nadine (Clelland) Looney, of Creston; and Toby Devick, of Marshalltown. His grandchildren: Brian Devick, Denise Runza, Theresa Hays, Samuel Devick, Garrick Looney, Gabe Looney, Myklyn Ripperger, Tiffany Madison, Trisha Devick, Tia Frydendall, Tyler Devick, Joel Devick and Caleb Devick; 21 great-grandchildren; one sister: Ruth Hines of Nevada; special friends, Doris Heng and Carol Berg of Marshalltown. He is preceded in death by his parents; his first wife, Ione; his second wife, Lucille; one grandson, Christopher Devick; sisters: Arlene McGrew, Dorothy McGrew, Lois Ray; brother, Dale Devick; brother-in-law, Allen Tarrence; sister-in-law, Rena Quinn, and many other family members.
