Clara Hinders, age 98, of Marshalltown, Iowa, passed away on the afternoon of May 16, 2026 at State Center Specialty Care.
Funeral services for Clara will take place on Friday, May 22, 2026 beginning at 10:30 A.M. at the First Methodist Church in Marshalltown. A visitation for family and friends will be held on Thursday, May 21, 2026 from 5:00 until 7:00 P.M. at the Mitchell Family Funeral Home in Marshalltown. The family encourages those in attendance to come dressed casually. Memorials in Clara’s name may be directed to the family for a later designation. Clara Beenken was born October 8, 1927 in Grundy County, Beaver Township to parents, Lutjen Beenken Sr. and Mildred Helen (Sink)Beenken of Stout, Iowa. Clara grew up on a farm near Holland, Iowa, where she was united in marriage on November 29, 1946 to Thiel Robert “Bob” Hinders. They made their home in Grundy Center for 40 years. They became the parents of Jerry Robert Hinders on April 1, 1954. Thiel R. Hinders passed away November 3, 1986.
Clara worked at the Grundy Style Shop for 25 years. In 1980, she opened Clara’s Café and operated it in Grundy Center for four years. In June 1992, Clara moved to Marshalltown, Iowa. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church and the “Joy Keepers” group at the church.
Surviving is her son, Jerry Robert Hinders (and wife Dianne Lynne) of Marshalltown; grandson, Alex R. Hinders of Las Cruces, NM along with many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; eight sisters, Katherina Ridder, Mariam Bohlen, Lena Anderson, Leta Gerloff, Mildred Katzner, Pearl Hartgrave, Anna Mae Clemons and Lavina Martin; as well as five brothers, Lutjen Jr., Wilbur, Edward, Alfred and Harvey Beenken.
