Claude Bernard "Bernie" Massey, 57, of State Center passed away peacefully in his home on December 24, 2021. Just like everything in his life, Bernie managed his short battle with cancer with strength and courage, and wanted to spend as much time with his loved ones as possible. In his final weeks, he did just that. On his final day, he was surrounded by his loving wife and three girls and was under the care of Iowa River Hospice. Memorial services for Bernie will be held on Saturday, January 8, 2022 at 1:00 p.m. at the Mitchell Family Funeral Home in Marshalltown. Visitation will take place prior to the service from 11:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m. Memorials may be directed to the family for later designation. Born on April 27, 1964 in Joliet, Illinois he was the son of Claude and Patricia Massey (Mackiokas). He attended school in Joliet and spent his younger years fishing at a property his family owned along the river. He was a thrill seeker and enjoyed riding dirt bikes and motorcycles. He was always a hard worker and it was at his place of employment where he met his wife Christina Massey (Snyder). They were united in marriage on June 19, 1982 in Joliet, Illinois and went on to have three girls. He was employed by Sun Air Freight, Waste Management, where he held many different positions within the company, and most recently Bell Salvage. He enjoyed many hobbies over the years including bowling, golfing, coaching softball, Nascar, fishing, the casino, camping, but his favorite was spending time with his family, especially his grandkids. They were his pride and joy. He was their biggest supporter and number one fan. You could always find him at their events and/or coaching from the side. He was an avid St. Louis Cardinals and Chicago Bears fan. Left to cherish his memory is his loving wife Christina "Chris" Massey of 39 years; daughters Natalie (Jacob) Weuve of State Center, Nicole (Kraig) Miller of Marshalltown, and Ashley (Joe) Eilbeck of State Center. Grandchildren Ryleigh and Jackson Weuve, Myles, Addison, Emma, Alivia and Cole Miller, and Ellie and Easton Eilbeck; and great granddaughter Nova Miller. Mother-in-law Mary Snyder of Marshalltown. Siblings Dave (Kim) Massey of Waukee and Lynne (Bob) Basarich of Minooka, Illinois. Sister-in-law Karen (Tim) Snyder of Marshalltown, Tom (Aimee) Snyder of Marshalltown, Kathy (Tyrone) Patterson of Ankeny, and Stephen Snyder of Marshalltown as well as many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. He is preceded in death by his parents Claude and Patricia Massey, Father-in-law Charles Snyder, brother-in-law Tim Snyder and nephew Michael David Massey.
