Claude Slifer, 82, of Marshalltown, died Tuesday night, December 14th, at the MMSC with his loving family at his side. His death came peacefully at 10:10 p.m. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, December 18th, on his 83rd birthday, at the Mitchell Family Funeral Home with Pastor Karen Cluts of the Elim Lutheran Church officiating. He will be laid to rest in the Riverside Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 5-7:00 p.m. on Friday at the funeral home. For condolences, please visit www.mitchellfh.com. The Mitchell Family Funeral Home is caring for Claude and his family. Ph 641-844-1234. Born on December 18th, 1927, in Marshalltown, he was the son of Roy and Amanda (Petrie) Slifer. He attended school in Marshalltown.On July 1st, 1944, he was united in marriage to Virginia Tesar at the parsonage of the Hope United Methodist Church in Marshalltown. They made their home in Marshalltown where he was employed at Hillemans Packing Plant, Marshall Pack for 25 years and the R.D. Steward Construction until retiring at age 62. Claude loved and cherished his family and enjoyed helping them with projects. He was a talented craftsman, enjoyed woodworking and had quite the collection of tools. He will be greatly missed by many. Left to cherish his memory are Virginia, his loving wife of 66 years, his children: Claudia (the late Willy) Backhaus, Barb (Hans) Beecken, David (Sue) Slifer, Tina Roberts, Lynette (Curtis) Miller and Melinda (Craig) Wolken all of Marshalltown, numerous grandchildren, step-grandchildren; great-grandchildren and step-great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren as well as his siblings: Florence Meling and Clara Proffitt both of Marshalltown and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. In death, he rejoined his parents, daughter Debbie Briggs who died in February 2001, siblings Blanche, Viola, Fred, Robert, Nellie and those in youth.
