Claudia Backhaus

Claudia Ann Backhaus, 68, of Marshalltown, died Sunday, February 10, 2013at her home.Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, February 16, 2013 at the Mitchell Family Funeral Home in Marshalltown, Iowa. Visitation will be from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. on Friday, February 15, at the funeral home. Memorials may be directed to the family to be designated at a later date. Phone 641-844-1234.Born Claudia Ann Slifer on December 13, 1944, in Marshalltown, she was the daughter of Claude and Virginia (Tesar) Slifer. She graduated from the Marshalltown High School with the class of 1963. On February 29, 1964, she was united in marriage to Wilhelm Willy Backhaus, a well-known Marshalltown barber established on East Main Street. The couple was united in marriage at the Pentecostal Church in Marshalltown. They made Marshalltown their home all of their married lives where she was employed at Dunham-Bush and later MEPCO. She was a member of the UAW Local #893. Claudia will be fondly remembered for her collection of hundreds of cookbooks and enjoyed dancing, bowling, camping (especially at Rock Creek), time with her sister and her grandchildren. She treasured her family and will be greatly missed by all of them.Left to cherish her memory are her daughter, Carmen (Kirby) Hasselman of Marshalltown, grandchildren: Eric (Krystal) Bell of Webster City, Brooke Bell (Francisco Varela) of Marshalltown and Shay (Jennifer) Hasselman of Las Vegas and Deja Hasselmann of Marshalltown ; her great-grandchildren: Abel, Dona, Ryder, Dulce, Hunter, Day and baby Bell on the way! Also surviving are her mother, Virginia of Marshalltown, siblings: Barb (Hans) Beecken, David (Sue) Slifer, Tina Roberts, Lynette (Curtis) Miller and Melinda (Craig) Wolken all of Marshalltown as well as many nieces, nephews and other family members she held very dear..In death, she rejoined her beloved Willy who died in 1989, her dad Claude in 2010 and sister Debbie Briggs in 2001.
