An American Patriot and Veteran, Clifford Harmer, died today, Friday, October 26th, at the Iowa Veterans Home in Marshalltown where he has resided since January 8th, of this year. Funeral services celebrating his life will be held at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday, October 30th, at the Mitchell Family Funeral Home in Marshalltown with Masonic Rites conducted. He will be laid to rest in the Iowa Veterans Home Cemetery with full military honors. Friends may call at the Mitchell Family Funeral Home from noon until the service time on Tuesday. Born on July 13th, 1918, in Emerson, Nebraska, he was the youngest of 13 children born to Sylvester and Alice Jane Ettleman Harmer. He received his education in Emerson and Omaha. Mr. Harmer served our country proudly in the United States Army Air Corps during WWII and just prior and retired in 1964 as a Captain in the United States Air Force. Capt. Harmer also was involved in Naval Intelligence after retirement, a defense investigator, judge, constable and was elected Mayor of Log Cabin, Texas. He moved to Iowa to be near his daughter and family and later the Iowa Vets Home, but still considered Texas his home- especially during the wintertime. He was an avid supporter of the armed forces, the police, and the people in his communities. Clifford will be fondly remembered for his love of family, the State of Texas, and sense of humor. Left to celebrate his life are his children: Barbara Whittle, Robert Harmer and Mary (James) George of Huxley, 12 grandchildren, numerous great-grandchildren and his IVH family. In death he has rejoined his loving wife Enid Eddie whom he shared 52 years and died in 1998, his daughter Patty and 12 siblings.
