Dale Smith, 80, of Conrad, entered into eternal rest Saturday, October 15, at his home while surrounded by his loving family. Funeral services for Dale will be held at 10:30 a.m., Tuesday, October 18, at the Conrad United Methodist Church. Burial with military honors will take place at the Conrad Cemetery. There will not be a visitation. He attended the Conrad schools and was a graduate of the Conrad High School where he was active in football and baseball. Dale honorably served his country during the Korean War Period as a member of the United States Army, 508 Red Devil Paratroopers. During this time he trained many paratroopers before receiving his honorable discharge in February of 1954. Dale was united to the love of his life Esther, on September 4, 1954, at the Little Brown Church in Nashua, Iowa. Together they made their home in Conrad and lived in the house he built for their family. Dale was a carpenter throughout his lifetime and built many homes in the Marshall and Grundy County, Iowa areas. He was an avid sports fan of the Chicago Cubs. Most of all he loved watching and supporting his children and grandchildren at their many games. He also enjoyed the outdoors where he spent time biking, fishing and taking the annual family vacations to Wisconsin. Dale was a member of the Conrad American Legion and attended both the Conrad Presbyterian Church and the Conrad United Methodist Church.Dale is survived and will missed by his wife Esther of Conrad, his children; Terry and Kimberly (Smith) Benskin of Laurel and their son Carl, the late Douglas Smith and his children Clay and Tyler Smith, Chad and Karla (Smith) Dielschneider of Conrad and their children Kacie, Beau and his wife Jill and Tanner, Korine (Smith) Edgerton and her children Cameron, Esther, Hana and Luke, his brothers Robert (Georgia) Smith of Marshalltown, Eugene Smith of Marshalltown as well as several nieces and nephews.Dale was preceded in death by his son Douglas in 2008, his parents Boyd & Blanch Smith of Conrad and his sisters Phylis Jordan and Joyce Isben of California.
