Daniel Rebik was born April 29, 1950, in Marshalltown, Iowa to Erwin Wesley and Monica Marie (Oetker) Rebik. Dan graduated from Lenihan High School in 1968. After high school he attended the University of Northern Iowa where he received a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1972. He worked different jobs throughout his life including the Co-Op in Haverhill, Iowa, Barilla America, Inc., manufacturer in Ames, Iowa (we all received pasta samples for some tasty meals during that time!). He retired from Barilla, but was bored at home, so he began working at the Fareway Grocery Store in Marshalltown, Iowa. He really liked talking with the customers, telling them jokes and making them laugh! Dan lived most of his adult life in Haverhill, Iowa. He enjoyed becoming a volunteer Fire Fighter from 1973 to 1998 and served as the Fire Chief when duty called.
He married Marge Griswold in 1973 and together they had three sons- Bradley, Wesley and Matthew. Later in life Dan and Marge divorced, but remained friends, attending family events together at times.
Growing up Dan would play games with his sisters and brother- from board games to badminton and shared the bag of popcorn he would bring home after swimming lessons! Dan was happy to help with dinner dishes- he would finish all the small amounts of food too little to save and too much to throw out…and he never gained a pound! He was a great brother!
Dan believed in a foundation of religion and education and sent all the boys to St. Mary’s/St. Henry’s grade schools. His sons all said he taught them a great work ethic, sometimes working two jobs to be sure they had what they needed/wanted. He would play catch with the boys using his “rocket arm”, throwing either a football or baseball. In the winter Dan would create snow sculptures including inclines and curves where the boys would slide down and around. He passed this on to his sons, so his grandchildren also enjoy sculpture sledding! He was always funny, whether telling them stories or making up jokes! He did a great Donald Duck voice! Once he passed out watching Matt get stitches after cutting off his fingertip. And he would encourage Brad to point his toes outward when standing, to counter the slight bowlegs he was born with, which Brad still does. He was a really great dad!!
Those left to honor his memory are his sons Brad (Jeni) Rebik of De Witt, Matt (Mary) Rebik of Grimes, Wes Rebik of Haverhill. Sisters Christine (Jim) Crandell of Newton, Charlene Smith of Polk City, Cynthia (Mark) Christensen of Polk City. Sister in-law Sharon Rebik of Marshalltown, Brother in-law David of Yarmouth. Eight grandchildren, eight great grandchildren, multiple other relatives, nieces, nephews, and friends. He is proceeded in death by his parents Erwin and Monica Rebik, siblings Catherine Bush and David Rebik, nephew Darin Bush.
-Lovingly written by his family.
