Darlene Rose Van Kirk, 77, of Marshalltown, passed away on Sunday, July 24, 2016 at the University of Iowa Hospital and Clinics in Iowa City. Memorial services in Marshalltown for Darlene will be held at 7:00 p.m. on Monday, August 1, 2016 at the Mitchell Family Funeral Home. Visitation will be prior to the service from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. On Wednesday, August 3, there will be an additional visitation held at Lensing Funeral Home in Iowa City from 1:00 p.m. until 3:00 p.m. with burial to follow at Saint Josephs Catholic Cemetery in Iowa City. The family requests that you come in your favorite Iowa Hawkeye attire and casual dress. Memorials may be directed to the family. Darlene Neuzil was born on August 28, 1938 in Iowa City to Frederick and Agnes Stebral Neuzil. She attended the county school system and then graduated from University High School in Iowa City in 1957. On November 30, 1957, Darlene was united in marriage to William Van Kirk. Darlene had worked for the Times Republican for 33 years and was well known for her article At Home with Darlene, where she supplied many stories of her family and recipes she loved to share. Darlene enjoyed cooking, canning and going to garage sales. She was an avid Hawkeye fan and enjoyed watching them play basketball and football. She also enjoyed traveling throughout Iowa to visit all of the freedom rocks. Darlene is survived by her husband of 58 years, William. Children: Douglas (Robin) Van Kirk of Iowa City, Dennis Van Kirk of Marshalltown, Debra (George) Gardner of Wapello, Iowa and Dustin (Jennifer) Van Kirk of Marshalltown. She is also survived by her 7 grandchildren, 1 great grandchild and numerous nieces and nephews. Darlene is preceded in death by her parents Frederick and Agnes and 5 siblings.
