Darrell Jorpeland, age 88, of Marshalltown, Iowa, passed away on the morning of August 31, 2025 at Unity Point St. Luke’s Hospital in Cedar Rapids.
Services for Darrell will be held on Friday, September 5, 2025 beginning at 1:00 P.M. at the Mitchell Family Funeral Home. A visitation for family and friends will be held on Thursday, September 4, 2025 from 5:00 until 7:00 P.M. at the Mitchell Family Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, memorials in Darrell’s name may be directed to his family for a later designation. Darrell Duane Jorpeland was born February 17, 1937 in Emmetsburg, Iowa. He was the son of Henry “Hank” and Irene (Schubert) Jorpeland. Darrell grew up in various communities in his younger years with a considerable amount of time spent in Gladbrook, Iowa. In his last year of school, Darrell attended Marshalltown Community High School and graduated with the Class of 1955.
On September 17, 1958, Darrell was united in marriage to the love of his life, Diana White. They made their home in Marshalltown, Iowa and welcomed three children, Scott, Shelle and Mindy. He worked for Fisher Controls at the Governor Road Plant as a Machine Maintenance Lead along with many other positions over the years. In addition to working full time with Fisher Controls, Darrell had his own roofing business that he had on the side. He eventually retired from Fishers after 36 years but still worked various part time jobs including for CIRSI.
Darrell remained constantly busy and was always known for tinkering on some sort of project in his garage. He additionally participated with the Heartland Sundae Road Riders, UAW Local 893 and the Goldwing Club. His favorite hobbies included, woodworking, fishing, camping traveling on his motorcycle and visiting all except 13 states and traveling to the Black Hills in South Dakota. He was an avid sports fan cheering on the Chicago Cubs, Iowa Hawkeyes and Minnesota Vikings. He was known to be a jack of all trades and specialized in building custom campers from buses, custom 3-wheel VW’s and working on model airplanes and trains. He was music oriented and loved listening to country music even playing lead guitar in many bands.
Those left to remember and cherish his memory are his children, Scott Jorpeland of Marshalltown, Iowa, Shelle (Joel) Johnson of Toledo, Iowa and Mindy Jorpeland of Toledo, Iowa; grandchildren, Sabrina (Will) Russell, Justin (Hannah) Jorpeland, Matt Jorpeland, Amanda (Ben) Tweeten, Renee Simmons, Raelyn Johnson, Andrea Johnson and Erika Johnson; along with his brother, Curt (Jo) Jorpeland of Kyle, Texas.
He was preceded in death by his wife Diana Jorpeland; parents, Hank and Irene Jorpeland; uncle Gib Schubert; mother and father-in-law, Onnie and Ines White; and brothers-in-law, Darwin White and Gary White.
