David Brown, 92, died January 30, 2011 at the Marshalltown Medical and Surgical Center.Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, February 4, 2011 at the Mitchell Family Funeral Home in Marshalltown. Phone 641-844-1234.David Edgar Brown was born on July 15, 1918 in Verango, Nebraska, to Exie and Laura Brown; he was educated in Kearney, Nebraska. In 1936 he joined the CCC Camps and was stationed in Mitchell, Nebraska. He was discharged in 1936. David was married to Hilda E. Scott in 1939, they made their home in Palisade, Nebraska, until her death in 1940. He then married Irene Harden; they made their home in Palisade until he was called into the service in 1943. He served in the Navy Armed Guard Unit on a troop ship as a gunner. David was discharged in 1945. David had spent many years in construction and law enforcement. In 1960 he married Grace McDowell and to this union his daughter Rachel was born. David had worked as executive housekeeper in hospitals in Nebraska and Iowa, the last being at the Marshalltown hospital retiring in 1980. After retirement, he lived in the Clemons area with the Larry Keck Family. David loved to garden and raised huge gardens. He also enjoyed the outside, especially fishing and watching wildlife. He would walk the country roads looking for choke cherries to make jelly. One of Davids biggest thrills came last summer when he went on an Honor Flight to Washington DC.David is survived by his daughter, Rachel M. Stefhenson and his sister Opal Barta of Lexington, Nebraska.
