David Fagle

David Loring Fagle was born September 23, 1931 in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, to Loring and Iola Fagle. Upon graduating from high school, Dave worked a year before attending Iowa State Teachers College in Cedar Falls, Iowa. After a year of college, he was activated into the Iowa National Guard, where Dave served as a cook. Returning home, he and Opal Hand were married on October 7, 1951. Dave re-entered college and received the B.A. and M.A. degrees from the University of Northern Iowa, where he held his first job as an educator in the Science Department. They moved to Knoxville, Iowa, for Dave to teach science classes at Knoxville High School, before coming to Marshalltown to continue teaching. Later, Dave was hired as a science instructor and became the head of the Science and Mathematics Division at Marshalltown Community College. Next, he joined the Marshalltown Community School District in the Science Department. Dave taught thirty-two years in Marshalltown before retiring. A public visitation will be held at the Mitchell Family Funeral Home (1209 Iowa Ave. West Marshalltown, Iowa) on Wednesday, October 21, 2015 from 6 -8:00 p.m., Funeral services will be held on Thursday, October 22, 2015 at the First United Methodist Church in Marshalltown at 10:30 a.m. In lieu of flowers the family encourages that memorials be directed to the Fagle Future Teachers Scholarship in care of the family, First United Methodist Church or the Martha Ellen Tye Theater. In his list of teaching awards, Dave was honored as Iowas Teacher of the year, received the Iowa Academy of Science Distinguished Science Award and was inducted into the Hall of Fame for his active role in the Iowa State Science Fairs. In past years, Dave was also an active member in the Marshalltown Rotary Club and a member of the Marshalltown First United Methodist Church. During his lifetime, Dave enjoyed fishing; hunting, seeking out unique rocks, and knew where to find mushrooms. He took pride in growing large beds of tulips and flowers, always had a camera ready to catch a memory. Even before E Harmony.com, Dave and Opal enjoyed introducing friends that led to many marriages! He loved traveling the world with numerous trips and cruises. Uncle Dave was a great storyteller and loved holiday activities with all of the nieces and nephews. He enjoyed activities with his friend, Marilyn Delange. Left to cherish his memory are his nieces, nephews, cousins, sister-in-law Irene Wilkins from Boone, Iowa, Abbie Hand from Boone, Iowa, and many friends. Dave was preceded in death by his parents and loving wife, Opal.
