He graduated Marshalltown HS in 1965, then enlisted in the US Army. While in Viet Nam, David was awarded the Bronze Star for Valor and received two Purple Hearts. Upon discharge from the service, he began his post military life with his firstborn child Steven, residing in Melbourne, Iowa. In 1969 he met his lifelong partner Shirley while raising Steven as a single parent. Shirley brought two children into the relationship, Terrie and Michael. In 1972 David and Shirley were married. They had one child together (Nichole). In 1973 they purchased a 5 acre plot of land east of Marshalltown and began building their forever home as a family of six. David worked at Fisher Controls in Marshalltown for 41 years, retiring in 2006. He loved building things in his wood shop and landscaping the property. He led his family by demonstrating his willingness to work hard to achieve their goals. He taught his children the value of a dollar and how to reap what you sow. They raised their own animals and maintained a garden every year, which produced much of what the family needed for food. They chopped and split wood to supply heat in the winter months. Never wanting to put his family in debt, he purchased the building supplies for the house as money was saved. After their children grew up and moved on with their individual lives, David and Shirley continued to upgrade and enhance their home and property. They began planting a variety of flowers and plants, as well as creating multiple Lily gardens. Together they created Turkey Ridge Lily Farm, which was once featured in Better Homes and Garden magazine. Their property was a frequent stop on the annual Lily tour across the country. David is preceded in death by his loving parents Harold (Pat) and Betty Halverson and brother Larry. He is survived by his wife of nearly 50 years Shirley, his children Terrie (Gary) Hoelting, Steven (Laura) Halverson, Michael (Jennifer) Lada, Nichole Burrell (Fiancé Willie Guy).
