David Robert McKibben was born on December 7, 1982 in Marshalltown to Richard and Kristine (Dull) McKibben. He was raised in Albion, Iowa and graduated from Marshalltown High School in 2001. He worked at Martin Marietta in Pella for about 8 years. He then moved home to Albion and began working at Mid-Iowa Petroleum Services, now known as Mid-Iowa Petroleum Equipment. David enjoyed his work and had many certifications for inspections and installations of petroleum equipment.
David had a passionate love for all things sports! He could recite facts, stats, scores and where teams originated from and he loved to quiz you on it. He was a sports encyclopedia! His favorite teams were the Kansas City Chiefs, Iowa State Cyclones, The St. Louis Blues and the Atlanta Braves. He loved all things to do with March Madness and would bet his mom a Zeno’s pizza that his bracket would be better than hers. (She usually got a free pizza out of the deal.) He loved his Chiefs so much that he would get chills when he saw Arrowhead stadium. When they finally won the Super Bowl in 2020, he cried with joy! David also loved watching sprint car races and NASCAR races. He would take his niece and nephew to see the races in Knoxville every year.
David also had a deep love for his niece, Holly and nephew, Ashton. They meant the world to him. He was always at every dance show, swim meet, church event, school concert, for the kids. He was Ashton’s t-ball coach for the last two years and loved every minute of it! He would always take the kids to Dollar General on the golf cart and taught them both how to drive it. He loved to build Legos with Ashton and would buy him some cool kits for them to build together. David loved the kids like they were his own, and they loved him as well. His goal in life was to be the “fun” uncle and he made every day a blast.
David was a generous, kind and loving person. Before his father passed away, David promised his dad to take care of his mother. David took that promise to heart and moved back home to help Kris out in any way that he could. He would stop what he was doing to help anyone out. He didn't know a stranger. He especially liked managing the RAGBRAI charter service through the local club. He has done RAGBRAI support services for over 20 years. He loved getting to know the people, setting up the camp for others, taking them on the golf cart to where they needed to go and drinking a nice cold beer and chatting the night away. He made many life-long friends through RAGBRAI and driving across the state for work. He had friends in every corner of the state. There were only a few dozen towns in Iowa that he had not visited yet.
David is survived by his mother Kris McKibben of Albion, brother Matthew (Kelsey) of Marshalltown, niece Holly and nephew Ashton and his fur baby Cosmo, uncle Ellis McKibben of Liscomb, cousins Jeff Arnold and Jennifer (Justin) Caylor of Indiana, Alex Dull of Texas and Annie Dull of Minnesota, and numerous other cousins and friends.
David was preceded in death by his father Richard McKibben, maternal grandparents John and Kathryn Dull, paternal grandparents Robert and Leora McKibben. Also his uncle Kevin Dull and Aunt Connie Arnold.
