David Mcnary

David "Dave" McNary, 73, of Marshalltown, Iowa, passed away peacefully on November 27, 2022 at his home under the care of Iowa River Hospice.

Funeral Mass for David will take place on Thursday, December 1 at 11:00 a.m. at St. Francis of Assisi Parish: St. Mary Catholic Church with Father Kyle Tietz officiating. A visitation will take place one hour prior beginning at 10:00 a.m. A private burial will take place at Riverside Cemetery. Memorials may be directed to the family for later designation. Born David Harvey McNary on January 18, 1949 in Mitchell, South Dakota, he was the son of Harvey and Margaret (Heck) McNary. He grew up in Marshalltown, Iowa and after graduating from Lenihan High School, he went on to attend classes at the University of Iowa. David was united in marriage to Helen Gerber on October 18, 1980 in Marshalltown, where they made their home. They were married 35 years before her passing in 2015.

David dedicated his career as a conductor for Union Pacific Railroad until his retirement at age 60. He was an active member of the union, at one point serving as secretary treasurer. He was also a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church and active in the Democratic party. David was blessed to spend the last several years of his life with his companion, Sue Dankbar. In his free time, he enjoyed computers, bike rides, traveling and grilling. He was also an avid Iowa Hawkeye fan. More than anything else, David loved spending time with his family. His grandchildren always made him so happy.

Left to cherish his memory are his three children: Eddie (Dennise) Schmidt of Le Grand, Kerrie (Britt) Taul of Montour and Christen (Terry Bickel) Schmidt of Marshalltown; eight grandchildren: Samantha, Christopher and Alexis Schmidt, Brenden and Trevor Taul and Leslie, Ethan and Ellie Schmidt; several great-grandchildren; his significant other, Sue Dankbar; two sisters: Mary (Norman) Erlandson of Florence, TX and Paula (Dennis) McKenzie of Franklin, TN; sister-in-law Janice McNary of Urbandale and several nieces and nephews.

David is preceded in death by his wife Helen, his parents Harvey and Margaret and his brother, Daniel McNary.
