Dawnetta (Swayne) Pitt, age 83 of Marshalltown, passed away Wednesday, June 17, 2026, at UnityPoint Health – Allen Hospital in Waterloo, after a sudden serious illness.
Born Dawnetta Marie Swayne on November 7, 1942, in Knoxville, IA, the daughter of Frank and Ruth (Peterson) Swayne. She graduated from Knoxville High School in 1960.
In September of 1960, Dawnetta was united in marriage with her high school sweetheart, Donald Pitt. Don and Dawnetta welcomed two daughters: Dawn Renee and Terri Jo. The Pitt family moved to Marshalltown for new job opportunities.
Dawnetta worked as an accounting coordinator at Hy-Vee Grocery Store for 30 years, retiring in 2004. Dawnetta cherished time with her family above anything else. She enjoyed gardening flowers, decorating and maintaining her home, and golfing. Don and Dawnetta spent several winters in Florida enjoying the warm weather and beaches. Dawnetta also enjoyed cheering on the Iowa State Cyclones, Golden State Warriors, and Kansas City Chiefs.
Dawnetta is reunited in death with her parents: Frank Swayne and Ruth Schrader; daughter, Dawn Renee Sporleder; and sister, Judy Robinson. Left to cherish her memory are her husband of 67 years, Don; daughter, Terri Jo Little of Ankeny; grandchildren: Kaitlyn Sporleder, Tayler Benner, and Blake Murray; and great grandson, Brody.
Per Dawnetta’s and her family’s wishes, cremation rites have been accorded. A celebration of Dawnetta’s life will be held from 5:00 until 7:00 P.M. on Thursday, July 9, 2026, at Mitchell Family Funeral Home. Burial will be at a later date in Graceland Cemetery in Knoxville.
