Born March 26, 1937 in Garwin, Iowa, he was the son of Oakley and LaVera (Stamp) Atcher. He grew up in Garwin, where he graduated from Garwin High School in 1955. After meeting the love of his life, Helen Ceaser, the couple was united in marriage on September 8, 1963 at Sheridan Methodist Church. They have made Marshalltown their home all of their married lives.

Delbert was always very hard-working. In his early years, he operated a grader for Tama County before working construction for several different contractors, operating heavy equipment. He then dedicated 20 years to Fisher Controls, followed by several years as a mechanic at Meskwaki Casino, where he retired. Delbert was engineer-minded and had a variety of skills. He always fixed things on his own, whether it was mechanical, plumbing or electric. He enjoyed woodworking and had a soft place in his heart for rescue animals, especially his dogs. Delbert was passionate about his gun collection and enjoyed studying guns and ammunition.

Left to cherish his memory is his beloved wife of 59 years, Helen; his sons: Steven (Pamela) Atcher of Marshalltown, IA and Donald (Regena) Atcher of Rapid City, SD; six grandchildren: Joshua (Mark), Jessica (Jacob), Nicholas, Katherine, Caroline and Cameron; and three great-grandchildren-Olivia, Owen and Grayson, as well as his faithful friend, Ellie the Boxer.

Preceding him in death is his son, Greg, a granddaughter in infancy and his parents, Oakley and LaVera.
