Dennis Richard Hazelwood, 61, of Marshalltown died Tuesday July 21st, 2009 while in the care of his loving family and the Iowa River Hospice House. A celebration of Dennis life will be held at 1:00 p.m. Friday, July 24th at St. Marys Catholic Church. Visitation will be 5-7 p.m. Thursday at the Mitchell Family Funeral Home. Burial will be at a later date in the Iowa Veterans Cemetery at Van Meter. Dennis family suggests memorials be made to Iowa River Hospice or the Animal Rescue League. Dennis was born in Queens, New York on May 29th, 1948 to parents Walter and Florence (How) Hazelwood. He graduated high school from West Islip, NY and then attended Northwest Missouri State University, graduating with his Bachelor of Arts degree in Industrial Arts. Dennis served his country honorably in the United States Navy from 1970-1972. On April 24th, 1976, he was united in marriage to Mary Jane Elmore in Marshalltown. The couple resided in Marshalltown. Dennis was an electrician for Don Anderson Electric and Menninga Electric. He was a member of the American Legion, and enjoyed reading, woodworking, traveling in his R.V., and especially keeping up with the electric codes. Left to celebrate Dennis life is his beloved wife Mary Jane; his mother Florence Hazelwood of Beaufort, MO; his twin brother Donald Hazelwood of Pacific, MO, brothers Jim (Ann) Hazelwood of Annapolis, MD and Ed Hazelwood of Beaufort, MO; his sisters: Barbara (Bob) Jirinec of Winter Haven, FL, Kathleen Dascole of Cedar Hill, MO, Audrey (Mike) Paludan of Huntsville, AL, Susan Hensel of Grand Junction, CO, and Ann Holaway of Beaufort, MO; his God-children/nieces Tara and Ashley; many nieces and nephews; his dogs Matty and Shadow, as well as many friends. In death, Dennis has rejoined his father.
