Diana Mumm, 73, of Gilman, IA, passed away on the evening of December 7, 2023 at MercyOne Medical Center in Des Moines, IA. After successfully battling cancer three times in the past 20 years, she succumbed to pancreatic cancer and complications following surgery.
A Mass of Christian Burial for Diana will be held on Saturday, January 6, 2024 at 11:00 AM at St. Francis of Assisi Parish: St. Henry Catholic Church in Marshalltown, IA. Visitation with the family and a luncheon in the parish hall will follow.
Diana Linn Wigg was born June 12, 1950. She was the first of four children born to Bud and Doraine (Thomsen) Wigg in Harlan, IA. Diana grew up in Harlan and graduated from Harlan Community High School in 1968.
On January 17, 1970, she was united in marriage to the love of her life, Robert “Bob” Mumm at St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Harlan. They lived in Harlan for a year before they moved to Gilman, IA in January of 1971 to make their home and start a family. They were blessed with three children, many friends, and a loving community.
Diana kept constantly busy; she was active in many community groups and was made President of the Gilman Public Library Board after one stint of volunteer work for the library. She managed the household and stayed at home to raise the kids, until all were of school age, and then she went to work as the Director of the Senior Citizens Center in Toledo, IA. Along with her responsibilities as Director, she oversaw the local meal delivery program and also acted as the activities coordinator, taking great joy in joining her community in competitive card games, a favorite activity of hers. The last 20 years of her working life before retiring were spent working at the East Marshall Middle School in Gilman as the school secretary. She was dependably organized and delighted in the company of children, so this position was well suited to her.
In her free time and in retirement, Diana was most happy spending time with family. She loved attending her grandchildren’s school and sporting activities, taking vacations with their group of friends, sitting with her dog(s), hosting holidays, attending her weekly coffee chat with her best friends, and her annual family trip to Lake Okoboji. She was an avid reader and book club member, and enjoyed attending Broadway shows at the Civic Center in Des Moines, as well as on Broadway in New York. She kept their home in sparkling shape inside and out, also enjoying flowers and time in the garden. We are sure she is greatly relieved that she doesn’t have to clean out Bob’s tractor sheds.
Diana is survived by her husband of 53 years, Bob Mumm; her children, Jennifer (Luke Sullivan) Mumm of Rhinebeck, NY and Sydney, Australia, Greg (April) Mumm of Lamoille, IA, and Amber (Travis) Mumford of Altoona, IA; her grandchildren, Brayden Mumford, Abby Mumford, Waylon Mumm, and Corden Mumm; her mother, Doraine Wigg; her siblings, Bruce (Karen) Wigg and Darla Kurth; treasured nieces and nephews, great nieces and nephews, and dear friends.
She is preceded in death by her father, Bud Wigg; her brother, Curtis Wigg; and her paternal and maternal grandparents.
Memorials in Diana’s name may be directed to the Gilman Public Library. For additional information or to send condolences to the family, please visit www.mitchellfh.com or call (641) 844-1234.
