Dieter Butzlaff

Dieter Bodo Butzlaff, 85, of Melbourne, passed away peacefully on Friday, June 10, 2022, at Unity Point Health in Marshalltown with his wife, JoAnn, and daughter, Becky, at his side. Memorial services for Dieter will be held on Tuesday, June 14, 2022, at 3:00 p.m. at the Mitchell Family Funeral Home in Marshalltown. Visitation will take place one hour prior to the service; beginning at 2:00 p.m. Memorials may be directed to the family for designation at a later time. Dieter Butzlaff was born on December 28, 1936, in Danzig, Germany to parents, Bernhard and Liesbeth (Demolski) Butzlaff. He moved to the United States in April of 1957. On December 26, 1959, Dieter was united in marriage to JoAnn Moody in Marshalltown. Dieter was employed at Lennox Industries as a machinist and retired in August 2000 after 30 plus years. He worked at Hy-Vee for 11 years after retirement. Dieter was a member of the St. John United Church of Christ in Melbourne, Lions Club, and the Iowa Valley Bicycle Club. He enjoyed many years of RAGBRAI, running in local area races, gardening with JoAnn, and was an avid stamp collector. Dieter loved spending time with his family and watching Jared and Nicole play baseball or softball; going on bus trips across the country, as well as going to the Buffalo Round Up in South Dakota. Dieter was a hardworking man and was proud to hang up his American flag every day. Dieter is survived by his loving wife of 62 years, JoAnn; daughter, Becky (Robert) Riemenschneider of State Center; grandchildren: Jared (Ashley) Riemenschneider of Bellevue, Idaho and Nicole Riemenschneider of Tiffin, Iowa. He is survived by sisters: Erika Miller of Marshalltown and Heike (Bill) Seemann of Sioux City. Dieter is preceded in death by his parents, Bernhard and Liesbeth; daughter, Lorie and siblings: Gitta, Gerhard and Marianne.
