Donald J. Bosma, 82, a resident of the Villa Del Sol in Marshalltown, died there on Sunday, November 7, 2010. Funeral Services for Donald will be held at 10:00 AM, on Thursday, November 11, at the St. John United Church of Christ in Melbourne. Visitation for Donald will be held from 5:00 PM 7:00 PM on Wednesday, November 10 at the Mitchell Family Funeral Home where his family will be present to greet friends. Memorial contributions may be directed in Donalds name to either the St. John United Church of Christ or to the Marshalltown House of Compassion. He was raised and educated in the Baxter, Iowa area where he attended the Baxter school system. Following his schooling Donald worked for a short time in Aberdeen, South Dakota before returning home to work on the Waterman family farm in Baxter, Iowa. Donald was married to Doris Dammeier on September 9, 1950 in Eureka, South Dakota. To this union two children were born. Donald served his country as a member of the United States Army during the Korean War. Following his honorable discharge he returned back to the family farm and was later employed by the Ford Garage in Melbourne, Roskopfs Garage in Melbourne and International in Marshalltown until its closing. Donald then became a self-employed mechanic for several years until his retirement. Donald and Doris were married over 50 years until the time of Doris death in 2001.During his free time Donald loved fishing, playing cards, gardening, camping and cooking. He was an active member of the St. John United Church of Christ where he volunteered both his time and talents. Donald was also a volunteer for many years at the Iowa Veterans Home and the House of Compassion. Donald is survived by his daughter Judy (Jerry) Jorgensen of Marshalltown, his son Jeff Bosma of Marshalltown, his two grandsons: Vance Backoff and Lance Rodenbeck, his sister Lois Fleer of Seattle Washington, his sister-in-law Becky Schroyer of Baxter and many nieces and nephews. Donald was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Doris in January of 2001, his brother Victor and his sisters Annetta Waterman, Beth Maddox and Eris Townsley.
