Donald Gahyl Don Harman, 90, of Marshalltown, Iowa, passed away at Marshalltown Medical and Surgical Center on Saturday, October 11, 2014, with his loving family by his side. Funeral services for Don will be held at 11:00 a.m., Wednesday, October 15, 2014, at Mitchell Family Funeral Home. Family will greet friends beginning at 10:30 a.m., prior to the service. Military Honors will be performed by Veterans of Foreign Wars Harry C. Harter Post #839 and American Legion Frank Lewis Glick Post #46 following the service. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to American Diabetes Association or Alzheimers Association. The Mitchell Family Funeral Home is caring for Don and his family. Don was born on November 24, 1923, on a farm in Tama County, to parents, Walter R. and Vera Belle (Hodson) Harman. The family moved to northern Iowa where Don attended school at Plymouth and Nora Springs. While in high school, Don participated in several sports, including playing catcher on the baseball team. He also took part in many activities of the music department. Following graduation, Don enrolled at Iowa State University, where he majored in Animal Science. After two years, Don was drafted in the United States Army, and served in the Infantry in Europe. Following honorable discharge, Don returned to ISU and completed his bachelors degree. He accepted a position with the Farm Bureau and Iowa State Extension Services. He worked there for two years before receiving orders to report for active duty with the Army. Don was assigned to Ft. Hood, Texas, and later to Germany. Following his second discharge, Don once again returned to Iowa and continued working for the Iowa State Extension Service in Des Moines, and later in Marshall County where he was the County Extension Director. Don later joined Security Bank as Farm Manager and eventually opened his own office for Farm Management and Real Estate, which he continued until his retirement. During this time, he also served as president of the Marshalltown Board of Realtors. On September 10, 1949, Don was married to Nadine Jerrell at First United Methodist Church in Des Moines. Don and Nadine became the parents of three children: Donald C., Richard A., and Ann L. Harman. During his lifetime, Don maintained his interest in agriculture and was active with the Beef and Pork producers. Don enjoyed traveling and was a tour leader for Europe, Scandinavia and Hawaii. At each tour stop, Don was able to visit the Rotary Club, he would exchange a Marshalltown Rotary Club banner. He also enjoyed playing golf and bowling. Don was a member of First United Methodist Church, the American Legion, V.F.W., and Farm Bureau. Don is survived by his wife, Nadine; sons: Donald C. Harman of Everett, Washington; Richard A. (Qiushi Jennifer) Harman of Dublin, Ohio; and daughter; Ann L. Harman of Roseville, California; four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Don was preceded in death by his parents, and brothers: Eldred, Keith, and Ray Harman.
