Donald Leroy Hofer, 77, passed away at the Marshalltown Medical and Surgical Center with his loving family by his side, on Thursday, October 2, 2014. Services for Donald will be at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, October 4, 2014, at Mitchell Family Funeral Home. Visitation will take place one-hour before service, beginning at 10:00 a.m. Donald will be buried at Riverside Cemetery at a later date. Donald was born in rural Garwin, Iowa, on September 3, 1937, to parents, Leo Alvin and June Elizabeth (Clayton) Hofer. He graduated with the Toledo High School Class of 1955. Following high school, Don served his country honorably in the Iowa National Guard for several years. Don married Darleen Rae Prusha on June 9, 1957, at the Gospel Center Church in Tama, Iowa. He began his professional career at Pioneer in Toledo from 1955 until 1956. For the next 35 years, from 1957 1992, Don dedicated himself to Fisher Controls in Shipping and Receiving. Don owned and operated D and D Communications for many years, selling guns and CB Radios. Donald will be remembered as a people-person who loved to tell jokes and give advice. He also enjoyed hunting and fishing and time spent with his family. Don made his home at Grandview Heights for the past two and a half years, where he was well cared. His family expresses a deep gratitude for their loving care. Left to cherish Donalds memory is his wife of 57 years, Darleen; daughter, Marsha (Richard) Schmidt of Des Moines, Iowa; son, Daniel Hofer of Marshalltown; sister Betty Kearns of Altoona; grandchildren: Daniel (Angie) Hofer, Jr., Amber (Josh) Capalla, Codi Hofer, Eric Schmidt (Lisa), and Marc Schmidt, Nicholas Hofer, Nicole Hofer; 10 great-grandchildren, who will be serving as honorary pallbearers: Braden Weatherly, Carson Weatherly, Kinnick Capalla, Autumn Capalla, Jaxton Capalla, Hunter Hofer, Aidan Hofer, Derek Hofer, Jacob Schmidt, Nathan Schmidt, Brayden Schmidt; and special friends, Deb Hofer, Bob Mason, Darrell Blocker and Jean Bohmke. Donald was preceded in death by his daughter, Robin Lea Hofer, and his parents.
