Donald R. Peterson, 88, of Marshalltown, died early Tuesday morning, November 15, at the Southridge Nursing and Rehab Center where he has resided since April.Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Thursday, November 17, at the Mitchell Family Funeral Home with Pastor Barry Holmes of theFirst Congregational Church officiating. He will be laid to rest with full-military honors by the Veterans of Foreign Wars Harry C. Harter Post #839. Visitation will be one-hour prior to the services. Born on July 31, 1923, in Marshalltown, he was the son of Clarence and Maye Belle (Stehlik) Peterson. He received his education in the area of his birth.During WWII, he served our country honorably in the United States Army Air Corps (Air Force) serving from January 28, 1943 until his honorable discharge on March 8, 1946. He was stationed in Colorado, the Marshall Islands, Tarawa and Kwajalein. He returned to his hometown to begin working with his father in the carpentry trade and retired after 55 years of faithful and professional service.On February 3, 1944, while he was stationed in Pueblo, Colorado, he was united in marriage to Dorothy Benson. Donald will be fondly remembered for his precision, abilities and craftsmanship in his profession, his enjoyment of yard work, hunting, fishing and love of family. He was a member of theFirst Congregational Church, Tallcorn Trailriders and formerly served as the secretary of the Carpenters Union. Left to cherish his memory are his loving wife of 67 years-Dorothy, his children: Barbara (Tom) Jamison of Johnston, Beverly (Ralph Butch) Edwards of Des Moines, Nancy (Randy) Cech of Altoona and Lori (Cliff) March of Marshalltown; his grandchildren- Jill (Lee) Van Cleave of Conrad, Julie (Shawn) Hugen of Marshalltown, Corey (Dee) Cech of Altoona, Amanda (Jeremy) Koeppen of Marion, Tracey Cech of Des Moines, Emily Jamison of West Des Moines, Logan March and Lauren March both of Marshalltown; great-grandchildren- Makayla, Madison, Aidan, Chloe, Connor, Hallie, Hannah, Kyle and Kadie as well as brothers Ted (Peggy) and Larry Peterson all of Marshalltown and many nieces and nephews. In death, Donald rejoined his parents and siblings-Maxine McMahon, Mildred Paul, Charlotte Hart and Bill Peterson.
