Donald Shapley, 68, of Marshalltown, died Sunday, February 14th, at the Iowa River Hospice Home in Marshalltown. Funeral services will be held at 3:00 p.m. Thursday, February 18th, at the Mitchell Family Funeral Home with Harlan Nuss, chaplain of the Iowa River Hospice officiating. Visitation will be from 2:00 p.m. until the 3:00 p.m. service time. Full military honors will be provided by the combined Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #839 and American Legion Posts in the Marshalltown area. For condolences, please visit www.mitchellfh.com. Ph. 641-844-1234. Born on June 28th, 1947, in Marshalltown, he was the son of Eldon Reeves and Pauline (Fisher) Bane. He received his education in the Marshalltown schools. At the age of 17, he enlisted in the US Marines Corps to serve our country honorably for 10 years and two tours of Viet Nam. After returning stateside, he led a colorful career of long-haul truck driving, accomplishing a 5 million miles driven mark. For a time, he was also a prison guard in Walla Walla, Washington. Donald enjoyed playing the guitar and listening as well as singing country music, watching any football game and NASCAR, and going fishing. He once was able to sing and play with Buck Owens. He was blessed with many family members, including his wife Sherry (formerly Benson), whom he married on May 6th, 2011, two step-sons: Randy (Miranda) Benson of Le Claire, IA; and Todd (Colleen) Benson of Lancaster, Kentucky, sisters- Jackie Warden of Waverly and Sue Shapley of Marshalltown; half-sister Kathy Overland of Toledo, IA, step-brothers Ron (Pam) Bane of Marshalltown and Bob (Stacy) Bane of State Center, five grandchildren, four great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews. In death, he rejoined his grandparents, his parents, brother Lloyd Kroeger and step-sister, Donna.
