Donald "Don" Simmons

Donald “Don” LaVerne Simmons, 82, of Marshalltown, formerly of Drakesville, Iowa, passed away on Wednesday, July 28, 2021 at the Iowa River Hospice Home in Marshalltown. Per the wishes of Don and his family, cremation rites have been accorded under the care of Mitchell Family Funeral Home. A family-led celebration of life will take place on Saturday, August 7 from 2:00 P.M. to 4:00 P.M. at the residence of Don and Jan. Family and friends are invited to come to the Shelter House in the Drakesville Park from 2 P.M. to 4:00 P.M. for celebration of life memories. For condolences, please visit www.mitchellfh.com or call 641-844-1234. Born November 22, 1938 in Drakesville, Iowa, Don was the son of Donald “Max” and Lorene (Piper) Simmons. He grew up in Drakesville and graduated from Bloomfield High School, residing there until he moved to Marshalltown in 1969. He delivered for Home Furniture before beginning his career at Lennox, working for 33 years before retiring. On April 1, 1989, Don was united in marriage to Jan (Funk) in Marshalltown. In retirement, they spent their winters in Florida, where he enjoyed the many activities provided by their community. He especially enjoyed throwing horseshoes, visiting with neighbors and taking their beloved Sheltie, Prince for walks. Left to cherish his memory is his loving wife of 32 years, Jan; his daughters: Julie Simmons and Kathy Simmons; stepdaughters: Donna Mathis and Sherri (Chris) Vogt; 2 grandsons; 2 step-grandchildren; 3 great-grandchildren and his siblings: Donna (Gary) Eaves and Ronnie Simmons. Don is preceded in death by his daughter, Rita; his parents: Max and Lorene; his grandparents; a step-grandson in infancy and his loyal dog, Prince.
