Mitchell Family Funeral Home is caring for Donna and her family. Donna Lou Brittain was born on June 24, 1939 in Iowa City to parents Robert and Tillie (Holtsclaw) Brittain. She grew up in the town of Rhodes where she attended school and graduated high school with the Class of 1956. On April 26, 1957 she was united in marriage to her husband Larry. The two raised eight children together. Donna worked at the Maytag plant in Newton, Iowa until retirement. Upon her retirement she and Larry had built an ice cream shop in Rhodes (Kountry Kafe) where her grandchildren worked for a summer activity. She was also the owner of the Boot Heel Bar in Rhodes for a period of time while working at Maytag. She was active in the UAW Union, The Rebekah Lodge, as well as the Red Hat Society. In her free time, you might find Donna scrolling through her Facebook, attending the local ball games, going out for rides on her golf cart, fishing, attending rodeos and spending time with her family. She was a social butterfly. You could say that Rhodes lost their matriarch that always had a quick wit, at times a sharp tongue and a heart that would fill a room. Left to cherish her memory are her children, Sherri Conley, Sandy Reuter, Jim Shuey, Billie Jo Klos, Terri Clark, Penni Shuey, Larry (Horse) Shuey, and Shannon (Baby) Waigand; 18 grandchildren; numerous great-grandchildren; and her sister Hellen Guthrie. In death, she rejoins her loving husband Larry; parents Bob and Tillie Brittain; sister Dorothy Hill; and great grandchild Shelby Aikin.
