Doreen Hasenwinkel

Doreen Herta Hasenwinkel went to be with our Lord on June 23, 2021. She spent her life helping other people. Doreen was born February 22, 1939, in Cherokee, Iowa, to Arnold and Herta Hasenwinkel.  Her name was a combination word from her grandmother's names; Doris and Pauline. She attended Aurelia Consolidated School, where she starred in basketball. She graduated from the University of Northern Iowa.   Marshalltown was her next stop and where she spent the rest of her life. Her joy was teaching Middle School Physical Education at Anson and coaching many sports.  She taught summer swimming lessons for many years through the school district.  She was a faithful election poll worker. She joined Our Savior Lutheran Church when it was formed and served in many positions there as well as singing in the choir. TTT was a service organization she supported, especially getting girls ready to go to camp and selling nuts to support the project.  She was involved in “Stuff the Bus” getting area kids ready with school supplies.  Marshalltown hospital’s Volunteer Program involved her in assisting patients for same day surgery.  These voluntary services gave her much enjoyment.  She was always ready for card games and played in a card club.  She was involved in the Women’s golf league at “the Legion”.    She was a member of the Epsilon Chapter of Alpha Delta Kappa Sorority.  Doreen is survived by one sister: Eva Otten, three brothers: Bill (Gloria), Dennis (Louise) and Alan (Nancy) and many nieces and nephews in addition to a host of friends, especially those at Bickford Cottage. She is preceded in death by her parents and brother-in-law, John D. Otten.  Per the wishes of Doreen and her family, cremation rites have been accorded. Services for Doreen will take place on Friday, July 2 at 10:30 A.M. at Our Savior Lutheran Church, 3001 S 6th Street, Marshalltown. A visitation will be held Thursday, July 1 from 5:00 P.M. to 7:00 P.M. at Our Savior Lutheran Church. Interment will take place at Memorial Park Cemetery in Mason City at a later date. Memorial contributions may be directed in Doreen’s name to the Marshalltown YMCA-YWCA or Our Savior Lutheran Church.
