Doris Mae (Wood) Hoffman, 82 years old and a lifelong resident of Marshalltown, Iowa went home to the place that had been prepared for her by her loving Savior Jesus Christ on May 22, 2009.Born in Marshalltown on March 27, 1927 she was the daughter of Charles and Agnes Wood. She attended schools locally then moved to Des Moines, Iowa to attend Central Iowa Business School. It was in Des Moines that she met Melvin Guy Hoffman, Sr. her future husband. The two of them were married on November 23, 1954 at the First United Methodist Church in Des Moines. The newlyweds later relocated to Marshalltown as her husband Mel became employed at Fisher Controls, a career spanning 35 years. Over the years Doris was self-employed doing babysitting, ironing clothes and baking cakes for childrens parties, birthdays, and elementary school functions at home in order to be with her own children. She also offered her home as a resource in the Blue Star Home Program. Active in the community, she was involved in the Fisher Elementary School Parent Teacher Association, United Methodist Womens Circles through First United Methodist Church, became a founding charter member of Hope United Methodist Church, and was a member of the Central Iowa Helping Hands Club as well as the Daughters of the American Revolution. Doris enjoyed attending the annual Cedar Falls Bible Conference for many years. In her latter years, Doris was a member of the Vineyard Church in Marshalltown. Doris was preceded in death by her grandparents, parents, six brothers, one sister, four sisters-in-law, and husband. Even though Doris has gone ahead to her eternal home, others in her family are still earthbound four children Melvin Guy Hoffman, Jr. of Marshalltown; Kevin (Michelle) Hoffman of Dayton, Ohio; Melanie Hoffman of Detroit, Michigan; and Becky Reisinger of Marshalltown; five grandchildren Teri (Brad) Starn of State Center, Iowa; Tim Freiboth of Marshalltown; Dalynn (Will) Dowling of Grand Forks, North Dakota; Josiah and Jeremiah Hoffman of Dayton, Ohio; four great grandchildren Landon Starn and a little brother who will be known in the world this September; Dominick Dowling and a little sister, Makayla Lynn, who will be born within the next couple of weeks; and nephews and nieces from the Wood families.Visitation will be held on Monday, May 25 from 5:00-7:00 pm at Mitchell Family Funeral Home, 1209 Iowa Avenue West, Marshalltown, Iowa. A funeral service will be held on Tuesday, May 26 at 10:30 am at Hope United Methodist Church, 2203 South Third Avenue, Marshalltown. Burial will follow at Rose Hill Cemetary in Marshalltown. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be given to a Memorial Fund in her honor.
