Dorothy Cahill

Dorothy Mary Cahill, 93, of Marshalltown, Iowa, entered into eternal life on Tuesday, August 10.  A Celebration of Life will be held at 10:30 A.M. on Tuesday, August 17, at St. Francis of Assisi Parish-St. Henry’s Church in Marshalltown. Visitation will be held from 5:00 to 7:00 on Monday, August 16 at Mitchell Family Funeral Home with a special prayer service to follow at 7:00.  Online condolences may be sent to the family at www.mitchellfh.com  In lieu of flowers, Memorials may be directed to Iowa River Hospice or the family. Dorothy was born September 29, 1927, to William and Sadie (Engels) DeRock in Rockwell, Iowa.  After completing high school, she attended Mason City Junior College and taught school for five years.  On August 3, 1950, she was united in marriage to Charles Henry (Hank) Cahill, Jr. of Hampton, Iowa.  The couple made their home in Hampton for 17 years before moving to Marshalltown in 1967.  Besides being a fantastic homemaker, Dorothy worked at various jobs in the Marshalltown School District.  Together, Henry and Dorothy raised 5 children: Connie, Jeff, Denny, (Charles) Kelly, and Pat. After 63 years of marriage, Henry passed away in 2014. Dorothy was a devoted parishioner of St. Henry’s Catholic Church, where she often attended daily mass.  Other memberships she enjoyed were the Lioness Club, the Red Hats, as well as several bridge clubs.   She formerly was an avid golfer, loyal Marshalltown Bobcats fan, boisterous Hawkeye supporter, creative cake decorator, renown caramel roll baker, proficient seamstress, fervent reader, passionate card-sender, and addicted bridge player.  Her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren brought her great joy.  Dorothy will be missed by her daughter Connie (Kevin) Mogard of Marshalltown; her sons Jeff (Sue) Cahill of Bismarck, ND, Denny (Peggy) Cahill of Parker, CO , and Pat (Rose) Cahill of Olathe, KS; her grandchildren Jill (Andy) Paullus, Mike (Emily) Mogard, Tad (Jen) Cahill, Colin Cahill, Megan (Nate) Brockmeier, and Beau (Carissa) Cahill; her 11 great-grandchildren Jaida and Trace Paullus, Miah, Jaimon, Calla, and Zion Mogard, Jackson, Tyler, and Grant Cahill, and Theo and Ivy Brockmeier.  Dorothy is also survived by 4 sisters:  Irene (Leon) Casperson, Marilyn (Bob) Ermer, Shirley Reis, Dianne (Aaron) Salling; a special aunt Grace Lonergan, and one sister-in-law Leita Cahill.  In death, she rejoins her son Charles Kelly, her parents, and one great grandchild. The family wishes to deeply thank the staff at both Bickford and Iowa River Hospice for the excellent care given to Dorothy during her last days.
