Dorothy Mairs, 98, of Marshalltown, formerly of Gilman, died Monday, August 3rd, 2009, at the Villa del Sol Nursing Home.Graveside funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, August 6, 2009, at Prairie View Cemetery in Gilman with Pastor Jeff Blackman officiating. Visitation will be 4-7 p.m. Wednesday at the Mitchell Family Funeral Home in Marshalltown. Memorials may be designated to Gilman United Church of Christ. Phone 641-844-1234.Dorothy Evelyn Mairs was born on March 26th, 1911, in rural Gilman. She was the daughter of T.R. and Sadie (Westerfield) Thompson. She graduated from Gilman High School in 1929. On October 6, 1934, Dorothy married Raymond Mairs in Waterloo. After their marriage, the couple farmed in the Gilman area before moving to Gilman in 1982. Dorothy was a member of Gilman United Church of Christ, Tuesday Progress Club, and Rebekah Lodge. She loved taking care of her flowers, gardening, canning and making preserves, counted cross stitch and embroidery, and making cookies. The highlight of her life was spending time of her family.Surviving Dorothy are her four daughters, Ardith(Terry) Housman of Marengo, Jolene(Harold) McIlrath of Laurel, Mary Conner of Des Moines, and Pam Long of Cedar Rapids; her eleven grandchildren, Debbie Malloy, Greg Housman, Jeff Housman, Sara Wattonville, Shelly Schmitz, Sam McIlrath, Joy Gibson, Jamie Folkers, Todd Long, Tim Long, and Tedd Long; her 23 great-grandchildren; her brother, Tommy Thompson of Marshalltown; and her sister-in-law, Doris Thompson, of Iowa City.In death, she has rejoined her parents; her husband, Ray, who died in 1996; her sister, Goldie Lowery, and her two brothers, Roy Thompson and Vernon Thompson.
