Dorothy Richardson, 76, formerly of 104 North 15th Street, died early Wednesday morning, January 31st, at the Southridge Nursing and Rehab Center where she has resided since February of 2003. Her death came peacefully at 7:05 a.m. while in care of the Southridge Nursing Home and the Iowa River Hospice. The family appreciated the care she had received and it will always be remembered. Funeral services and a celebration of her life will be held at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, February 3rd, at the Mitchell Family Funeral Home with Pastor Scott Lothe of the Hope United Methodist Church officiating. She will be laid to rest in the Rose Hill Memorial Gardens with a time of fellowship and refreshments following at the hospitality room of the funeral home. Born Dorothy Thomas on March 5th, 1930, in Marshalltown, she was the daughter of Daniel Chester and Bernadine Fern (Thompson) Thomas. She received her education in the area of her birth, graduating from the Marshalltown High School in 1948. She later received her RN degree from the Deaconess Evangelical School of Nursing in Marshalltown in 1951. In 1981, she received her Bachelors Degree from the College of St. Francis in Joliet, IL. Dorothy was employed at the eye department of the Marshalltown Community Hospital and later for over 25 1/2 years at the Marshall County Care Facility, retiring as night supervisor on March 6th, 1992. While in the eye dept., she met Virgil through her co-worker, Almeda Austin. On September 16th, 1961, she was united in marriage to Virgil Richardson in Marshalltown. They made their home here where she was a charter member of the Hope United Methodist Church, the mall walkers and enjoyed camping at Colo, Tama and Branson, traveling and cruises, music, reading, dining out with family and friends and wintering in Arizona following retirement. Left to mourn her loss are her sister Donna (Joe) Martinez of Kalona, Iowa, sister-in-law Viola Richardson of Marshalltown, nephews Darryl Gunderson of Wylie, TX., Dan Gunderson of Fayette, PA., Dennis Gunderson of Charleston, SC, niece Beverly (Larry) Burg of Marshalltown, nephew Wes (Chris) Richardson of Montour, several great-nieces and nephews and a host of friends. In death she has rejoined her parents and her beloved Virgil, who died June 26th, of 2006.
