Her parents were Nellie (McNeese) Cook and stepfather Ira Rich. She lived in Brighton until age 10 when her family moved to nearby Oskaloosa where she graduated from high school in 1949. While roller skating, she met Harold Stone, a Grinnell farm boy and army veteran whom she married August 19, 1951 at the Oskaloosa Presbyterian Church. The Stones owned a small business and farmed before relocating to Marshalltown in 1957 to open a downtown skating rink across from the Memorial Coliseum. The couple later operated Stone’s Merchandise Mart and other antique businesses and managed antique auctions and shows throughout central Iowa. She also was one of the original owners of the Main Street Antique Mall in Marshalltown. Dorothy and Harold had two daughters, Diane, born in Grinnell, and Deb, born in Marshalltown. A hard worker her entire life, Dorothy held several jobs in her later years, including serving more than 12 years in the Salvation Army office. She worked full- or part-time until age 83. Dorothy traveled a lot in recent years, including spending three weeks in Germany at age 81, hosted by dear friend Claudia Winter. Dorothy’s faith was prominent in her life. Since 1957 she was a member of the First United Methodist Church where she taught Sunday school and served on committees and in many organizations. She was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary, Marshalltown Medical and Surgical Center Auxiliary, Early American Glass Club, PEO, Lioness Club and other community groups. Dorothy was a sports fan who cheered on the Cyclones on TV and in person, and she watched her grandsons compete in high school and college sports. She is survived by a loving family: daughters Deb (Dennis) Akins of Marshalltown and Diane (Steve) Jones of Ames; grandsons Doug (Katie) Akins of Bettendorf, Dan (Anja) Jones of Chesterfield, Mo., Mike (Megan) Jones of Ankeny, and Ben (Daranda) Jones of Overland Park, Kan.; and great-grandchildren Addison and Paisley Akins and Amalia, Alex, Liam, Alida, Greta, Cleo and Prue Jones. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by sister Marie (Cook) Norris, brother George Cook and stillborn grandson Jeffrey Jones.
