Douglas Alan Ames

Douglas Alan Ames, 69, of Marshalltown, Iowa, passed away on Wednesday, January 24, 2024, at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City.


Per the wishes of Doug and his family, cremation rites have been accorded under the care of the Mitchell Family Funeral Home. There will be no formal services. Doug was born October 2, 1954, in Elmore, OH to parents Richard and Mary Ann (Sonnichsen) Ames. He graduated from Woodmore High School in 1972. Doug always had an eye for design and made it his life’s work. He attended college for interior design and dedicated his career as lead designer at Mathis Brothers Furniture and Hoffman’s Furniture in Oklahoma City, OK. After his retirement in 2016, he began to find joy in building and furnishing doll houses. He started Doug Ames Designs in 2020, which now has 1,633 followers on Facebook. In 2023, he won 2nd place at the Iowa State Fair and the People’s Choice Award for doll houses with his Joseph Angle house. His collection includes over 1,000 miniatures. Doug also loved to dance and if there was a band playing at the local pub, you couldn’t keep him off the dance floor.


Left to cherish his memory is his partner, Kim Hornberg; brother, David Ames of Crofton, MD; best friend, John Lindstrom; his extended family at the Old Timer Tavern; and his fur babies- two dogs: Tinker and Cid and three cats: Thomas, Percy and Cooper.


Doug is preceded in death by his parents, Richard and Mary and his grandparents.
